New Book on Advanced Placement Efficacy No comments yet

Last week, Ed Week put out an important article on the efficacy of Advanced Programs across the country.  I think that this is a study that merits a close look.  If you have an early copy, please give us your review.  I know that we are strong advocates of AP and some of this material contradicts the studies that we’ve worked from.  let us know what you think.

NASSP No comments yet

We will be presenting at this week’s NASSP Convention in Phoenix. We have a number of readers from around the country. If you’re there, please stop by and say hello.

This will likely be our last major presentation for the school year. We have a few more webinars to wrap up and then we can get back to work on attending to our website.

We’re working on a multi-day workshop. It has been a regular request. If you’re interested, please email us and let us know. If it comes to fruition, we’ll make sure that we send you an invite.

Thanks for reading.

Video Presentation Available Through Illinois Association of School Administrators No comments yet

The Illinois Association of School Administrators which is the Illinois superintendent’s group contracted with me to put together a short video about RtI implementation at the high school level.  They were the recipients of RESPRO grant funds and are putting together a wonderful library of resources for superintendents.

This video is a quick shot of just a few of the things that we cover in our presentations on RtI.  I was trying to avoid the 30 minute threshold and actually went longer than intended.  It should give you a sense of some of our material.

It was a fun experience.  Howard, Joe and I had just finished presenting for the Illinois State Board of Education’s Superintendent’s Conference and the IASA was literally across the street from the conference.  They have a wonderful facility and a very warm and friendly staff.  We would like to thank Executive Director Richard Voltz for his time and great conversation about RtI and data in the state.  Also, Don Hahn was a great producer.  I literally just sat down and started filming.  It’s a neat technology from Sonic Foundry.  I basically talk into the camera and show my Power Point.

Check out the site and let me know if you have any questions.

Our Forum is Online 2 comments

Great news!

We have our forum up and running. Our fervent hope is that a truly collaborative experience will be created and used by educators everywhere.

www.empoweredhighschools.com/forum

In education, we don’t have the profit motive that exists in medicine to drive innovation and exchange of knowledge. Instead, we have deep passion. Hopefully, this online resource will fill the gap so that we can catch up to our friends in medicine and provide the very best for our students.

I know that many educators are weary of online communities. I want you to know that we are committed to a truly professional experience and are really about learning. Those who aren’t professional, won’t be with us for long. However, without risk taking, there won’t be any learning.

Please join in. It will be worth your time.

School Websites Based on RtI 1 comment

This is a quick little post, but I think it can be very valuable if everyone helps out. We know that we are getting quite a few readers and we would like to activate the collective knowledge of the readership.

So, we’re asking you to submit, via comments, school websites that have materials on RtI. We’re going to make a new page linked off the main page so that schools personnel can find the best work of other schools.

Here are a few submissions to get us started:

Indian Prairie District 204, Naperville, IL http://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/
You’ll have to search around, but it’s a treasure trove of parent letters and school improvement plans.

Colorado Springs District 11, Colorado Springs, CO http://www.d11.org/rt
Very important site. It has lot’s of good practical materials.

Rolling Meadows High School, Rolling Meadows, IL http://rmhs.d214.org/RMHSModel/
The only true “school website”. They’re model extends far past RtI and is deeply built upon Professional Learning Teams. Truly brings theory into practice.

Matteson Elementary School District 162, Matteson, IL http://www.sd162.org/rti.htm
Sadly, has some broken links. Nonetheless has some good information and, hopefully, more is coming.

Now, to leave a link, clink on the light gray “comments” link to the right of the title of this post. Feel free to post the links of your school or district’s RtI page.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Easy Access to Recommended Publications and Materials No comments yet

We’ve recently created an Amazon.com Associates site called the Empowered High Schools’ Store.  We intend to post the materials that we have found most helpful in our work.  From time to time, we will select works and annotate them to share the value that these works have had for us.  We’d love to here your insights and thoughts on the materials and the list.  If you have something that should be included, please let us know.   There is a lot of great work out there on the components of the model.  There is no way that we can be on top of all of it.  In the spirit of a true PLC, this is a great way to share knowledge and expertise.

Thanks for reading,

Charles
